A couple of things that I decided to get today that I had been needing for a while but never really thought to get: a flashlight and a toolbox.

Every once in a while I have required the use of a flashlight and never have had it on hand. I have had other small flashlights but I figured that if I were going to get one, I’d get one that could get run over by a Mack truck and still function properly. That’s right…a Maglite, baby! And I found it in a nice crimson, too.

Getting the flashlight made me think, as I was in Wal-Mart, that I really needed something to put all of my tools in. Most of my tools before this afternoon had resided in the bottom cubby of my Yaffa blocks, but not all of them. I needed a central location. And I found a nice-sized one (19″ by 12 1/2″, which is plenty big for me) for 10 dollars. So now my admittedly limited arsenal of tools has a permanent home.

Now, if I only had a reason to actually use the tools…

a few new year’s notes

Thoughts while wondering just how long the trip from Gainesville to Boca will be this spring…

  • Give LSU their props, and USC…give the BCS none at all.
  • You know, one of the nice things about having a girlfriend is that it’s cool to have a stuffed animal in your room…as long as it was a present from her.
  • My truck really needs its air conditioning fixed. It’s already 80 degrees here again! In January! On the 5th! Can you sense the bitterness already?
  • From the “Great, all I need is another distraction” Department”: I am now the owner of a new Gamecube, and NCAA 2004. Oh, dear…it’s a good thing I’m not enrolled in any actual classes…
  • Then again: it doesn’t bode too well for my qualifying test studying either, now does it?
  • One of life’s little pleasures for me this past semester has been watching the previews of Monday Night Football on ESPN for the “Jacked Up” segment and seeing how into it the guys get. It’s quite funny hearing their reactions to the big hits of the week.
  • I’m feeling a little pressure trying to come up with these on the fly…Kelly’s looking over my shoulder as I type.
  • Okay, so that’s not completely true: she’s looking from the side, not over my shoulder.
  • You haven’t gone to an 80’s party until you’ve gone as Pac-Man, baby! Pics to come, for sure.
  • My favorite “Real Man of Genius” is Mr. Pro Wrestling Wardrobe Designer. What’s yours?
  • Only for the Truly Geeky Dept. I now own the MST3K version of “Manos, the Hands of Fate.” And, yes, I will get my apartment-mates to watch it one day. Everyone needs to see the worst movie of all time to truly appreciate good cinema.
  • And speaking of which, I don’t care whose feathers I ruffle by saying this, but the Lord of the Rings trilogy is the best trilogy of all time. I’m saying this without having watched Return of the Jedi, or 95% of the Godfather movies. And I’m saying that I don’t need to to make that assessment.
  • Is it really that wrong to miss your broadband connection when you’re away on the holiday break? I mean, who wouldn’t want to get espn.com in a second as opposed to 30? I’m from an instant-gratification generation, baby…pander to me!

Oh happy day…

All of my Christmas shopping is done. My sister and brother-in-law (and their dog) have made it in safe and sound, and while the dog’s incessant yipping will mean little sleep for me tonight, it’s good to see them.

Tonight I went to Chad and Karen’s house for a get-together with some of the young adults in the church. I got to see Michelle Piper, who currently attends grad school at Alabama and goes to the BCM sometimes, as well. I gave my old Rubik’s cube for a white elephant gift (my new one moves more freely, so it’s not a big loss). We had a good time.

Tomorrow night — the Christmas Eve tradition that we’ve had for years. We’ll go over to my aunt’s house, eat, and play games until around midnight, at which point we’ll come back over here and sleep in on Christmas morning (except my sister and/or brother-in-law, due to the aforementioned dog). I have given some thought to going to see the Blue-Gray game since it’s only 30 minutes away, I’ve never gone before, and it’d be one last chance to see some Bama guys play this year. I doubt I’ll end up doing it, but you never know…

1122 headcovers?

So, the other day I’m playing golf and in the process of a round I lose my 3-wood’s headcover. It’s not a big deal, really, in that it was just a plain blue muff with a 3 on the top, but it put me on the lookout for a new set of headcovers.

At first, I naturally looked at the Alabama headcovers, but I found that the best price that I could get for a set of three was a touch under $30. This seems a bit much for me right now. My discretionary income (what little there is) could best be spent in other ways. But in the process of looking around, I stumbled upon a site that lets you make headcovers with your own logo on them.

Now, admittedly, it’s even more expensive than the college ones. And I’d have to order at least 12 headcovers. But the whimsical part of me thinks it’d be really cool to have 1122 Productions-brand headcovers.

what a weekend…

I caught a cold (which included some major sinus headaches) starting Thursday. It is only now going away. So I didn’t get anything accomplished school-wise. I lost the remainder of my energy 15 seconds into the Iron Bowl, only to get it back 15 seconds into the second half, only to lose it at the very end.

Of course, my sweetie isn’t here, although I do get to see her tomorrow (for almost a whole week!) when we make the trip to Bama for Thanksgiving. So things are looking up already.

counterfeit money…

I got one of the new $20 bills tonight when I went to the grocery store and asked for cash back. I tried to twirl and spin the bill around like that guy does in the commercial, but it wouldn’t do anything except fall to the ground.

I thought about suing the U.S. Mint, but they’d probably just recompense me with more faulty $20 bills.

mid-October notes

  • I am in the process of learning how to solve a Rubik’s cube. I’m now pretty close to being able to solve it no matter what position it starts in.
  • If you didn’t think I was a geek before, that last statement should have cemented my status in your eyes.
  • While I certainly don’t condone the blog entry of Gregg Easterbrook (or as some reading this entry might know him better, TMQ), I’m not completely sure that I agree with ESPN’s reaction, even if his comments were directed at the head man at Disney. Wouldn’t an apology and an on-site rewording have been sufficient? Now, all loyal Page 2 readers lose what’s most likely either their favorite or second-favorite (behind the Sports Guy) columnist in all of Page 2, and I’d be willing to bet that at least half will have no idea why.
  • I think that I picked a pretty good game to go to Tuscaloosa to see Alabama play, given the current circumstances. And it was definitely good to get to see a lot of old faces.
  • German’s Third Law of Graduate School: everyone else’s research always sounds much cooler than your own. Think I’m joking? Others agree…
  • If I had to pick the thing I like the least about being a teacher, I’d have to say it’s recording grades and regrading what seems to be all the time. Sometimes it feels like I’ll never completely catch up.
  • Sometimes it’s hard to look myself in the mirror and realize that I’m over a quarter of a century old. I just got a cold shiver thinking about it.
  • I’m in last place in my fantasy football league. I haven’t had a quarterback break 30 points in a game yet; I’m the only team that’s had this unfortunate turn of events happen to them. And yet, I still plug away, looking for someone on the waiver wire that will turn my season around (right). It’s fun, in a beating-yourself-up kind of way.
  • I will be going to bed in 10 minutes. It’s the earliest I will have been to bed in about a month.
