the holy grail

After stumbling upon a really good article about how to build a 3-column page in CSS that works in most browsers, including Netscape 4, I figured out how to make it work for a two-column layout on this page.

The result is a pretty reasonable facsimile for Netscape 4 viewers to what you’d see in Netscape 6, Mozilla or IE. Basically, the only difference is that you don’t see the background, and the entire page is white, not just the two columns.

This shouldn’t crash Netscape 4. However, I had to make a minor adjustment to the HTML code itself to make it work in Netscape 4, and that just might have messed up old AOL browsers. I have no way of testing that myself…anyone with AOL 6 or prior out there?

they’re all out the door

I sent off the OU application today, as well as the check for my Florida State application. Tonight, I filled out the Texas A&M application online (complete with credit card payment option. Nothing to mail off; nice). So it’s all done now. Now all I can do is wait and see who’ll let me in and hopefully give me some money along the way.

weekend update

The Florida State application is all but done. I’ve sent the online parts, and all I have to do now is mail the application identification and my application fee. The Oklahoma application is also going out tomorrow. All I have left is the Texas A&M application, and that one can also be primarily done online.

If that Bama-Florida game didn’t Roll your Tide, I don’t know what would. SEC Champs, baby!

Ran into Scott and Kelley again at church tonight, and went to Chili’s afterwards. Another married couple from their church met us there. In a neat twist, the couple I met spent a few years at OU while the husband got his master’s in music, so it was neat to hear from someone who’d experienced one of the schools that I’m looking at.

Another “Small World” update: Kelley, who went to UNA for a year, knows Tim Kilgore, whom most of my UA friends know at least in passing or as Karey’s brother.

The service was a presentation done by the youth of the church. It was a big youth choir, too; there were at least 100 singers. Made me wish that I’d gotten to do something like that in my time as a youth. Oh well; I got my opportunities at the BCM, I guess…

I was getting a little burned out on the Olympics as a whole toward the end there, but I’ve got to admit that Olympic hockey is much more entertaining to watch than the NHL. Too bad that Team USA lost, but hey, it’s still our first medal in hockey since 1980…

I was working tonight on moving my blog to a new content management system, but I’ve run into a snag that has to be worked on by our host. If and when it’s put into place, this site probably won’t look much different, but hopefully some other areas of 1122 Productions will be, and there will be other ones added as a result of the new CMS.

Falling into place

I got my semi-official GRE scores back today. I say semi-official because I can’t actually send a copy of them to the universities for my official scores, but at least two of them want a copy of them so they can start processing my transcript. Whatever. 🙂

Since I’ve gotten these back now, I should be able to send off most of the application material for all four schools this week. Then we play the waiting game.

This past weekend was very fun. Friday night, I hung out with Ricky and Tammy; I got to see their new computer (lucky dogs) and we played some NCAA. Good times. Although it’s pretty sad that we barely could beat UConn with Alabama…then again, it was the 2000 team… 🙂

Sunday, I went to a church in Trussville, and ran into Scott and Kelley Shirley, some Ozark Baptist friends who are now living in the area. I had lunch with them and got to see their nice new house. It was good to get to see them…

Added an insane thought. Imagine that…actual new content!

lane games

This is something that I know that everyone’s done at one time or the other. Picture this scenario. You’re about 100 feet away from a traffic light that’s red. You’re on a four-lane road, with one car in front of you in each of the lanes in your direction.

Do you do an almost instaneous appraisal of the cars to see which one should get “off the line” quicker and position yourself behind that car? I do this all the time. It’s probably the only time in my life that I start weighing the acceleration capacities of the Pontiac Grand Prix versus the Toyota Camry, for example.

Of course, the game can be made even more interesting if there are multiple cars in the lanes or more lanes than two. “Hm…; there’s a Grand Prix and an old Oldsmobile in this lane; there’s a Honda Accord and what looks to be a Z71 in the other lane. Easy lane change. So long, granny!”

Of course, putting big rigs in the equation almost always tilts the balance heavily towards non-truck lanes. But if the truck is sufficiently close to the front of the line, that opens up a new game entirely: the “can I get past everyone up to and including the truck, switch lanes, and get an open lane” game.

Quick poll

This is just one of those random things I think about (and maybe you have at one point in your life too).

Think of your CD collection. Got it? Okay. Now of the CDs that you have, here’s the question…if you could only listen to one track number off of each CD, what number would it be?

This means you can only listen to track #1 on each CD, or only #2, etc. Obviously, you want to pick the track that has the most songs that you like. And so that leads to the question of which track on a CD generally has the best songs.

My choice? In my collection, I’d have to say number 3, but 7’s close. What do you think and why?

My old stompin’ grounds

I went to Tuscaloosa yesterday to order some transcripts to send out to various universities. I decided to stick around and go to Discovery at the BCM that night.

I got to see a bunch of friends, some of whom I hadn’t seen since the bowl game, and some before that. It was fun seeing all the double-takes and hearing, “I thought that was your car out there!” Afterwards, Ginny, CYP, Bill, and I went to O’Charley’s. Good times…good times.

While at Discovery, I noted to myself that I really missed this aspect of college. It was nice to have a service like that in the middle of the week. Wherever I go, I hope that something like that exists.

not-so-handy study aid

I got the official GRE test preparation CD today; they apparently send it to everyone who registers for the test. Of course, I got it four days after I took the test, so its usefulness is somewhat limited. 🙂
