Notes: UNM and NMSU first met on January 1, 1894 - eight years before the first Rose Bowl - in what my have been the first college football game ever played on New Year's Day. The two teams played six games against each other before New Mexico became a state in 1912.

Trophy: Silver Spade and Brass Spittoon
Notes: The whereabouts of the original Silver Spade (a prospector's shovel found in the Organ Mountains near NMSU's Las Cruces campus) are unknown. A replacement was instituted in 1955. The Trophy was chosen for it's symbolism relating to both schools major fields of study - agiculture and mining - at the time. The Spittoon (oficially known as the Mayor's Cup) was added by the mayors of El Paso and Las Cruces in 1982. The winner of the series of games each season between these two teams and New Mexico is declared "Rio Grande Champion".
