Thanksgiving and registries
Last week, Kelly and I went to South Carolina to spend Thanksgiving with her parents and grandparents. It was notable for a few reasons: it was the first time that I've spent one of the "family holidays" with her side of the family. It was also the first time that I'd really gotten to meet her grandparents.
Kelly's grandfather is someone that I'd term "a gentle man". Her grandmother is quieter, although neither of them speak much unless spoken to. But it was fun (as it always seems to be with older people) watching them interact. The most notable times were when her grandmother would come up to her husband and take his hand, or put her hand on his back as they watched the birds and wild turkeys amble across their yard. You could tell that they were happy together, and had been for a long time.
That's what I'm getting ready for. Finally being able to be together and enjoy time without knowing in the back of our minds that one of us has to leave soon. Looking out the window and having her come up to me and put her hand on the small of my back. Helping her with her coat when we go out. Letting her out at the door and parking the car when it's raining.
